shhhhhhhh, don't tell anyone

I really want to go DNC but I am spending a good deal elsewhere so I told my the pres I would broach that subject until next year. So in the mean time I need to set up some serial communication.

Dumb question

I am wondering, I've connected machines and set up the communications before but I am at a loss on the cable connections between the computer com port and the back of the switch box.

Do I maintain the same connections that I created at the box ends?

How about handling the change for the DB25 on the box end to a DB9 on the computer end?

JP,

The answer is yes.

Null-Modem Cable TO the box from the PC.

Null-Modem Cable FROM the box to the Machine.

The Tx/Rx pins get swapped at the termination point so it's important that you make all your cables as if the boxes aren't there.

Normally on a Haas I just use a three wire connection. I know it isn't "technically" correct, but I just cross pins 2 and 3 and run # 7 straight through. I haven't found it necessary to jumper any pins together yet. That is not to say it isn't a good idea, but I haven't found it to really be necessary. Especially on a Haas. They are pretty forgiving in my experience. Just set everything to software handshaking and you should be set.

So from the computer to the switch box I just set up a DB9 to DB25 connector and I only hook up pin 7 and cross pins 2 and 3.

With a DB9 to DB25 null-modem connector, pins 2 & 3 on the DB9 Side connect directly to pins 2 & 3 on the DB25 side. It's a straight pass thru.

DB25 to DB25 has pins 2 & 3 swapped.

If it is strictly a DB9 to DB25 adapter then pins 2 & 3 are swapped.

Sorry for any confusion JP.

Ok, I have all of the wiring done and one machine connected to verify my settings before I go through plugging them all in.

When I send a program I get nothing, I hit reset and I get the RS-232 empty alarm, when I send out all I get is a bunch of gobbledegook.

Setting on both ends are

Baud 19200

Parity - none

Stop bit 1

Syncro - X on/X off

Bits 8

I've checked my wiring, it is correct,

2/3/7

with 2/3 reversed on the receiving end.

My DB25 on the box end is 2/3/7

My DB9 on the pooter i2 2/3/5

BTW I am using Cimco 4. something to try to communicate.

Any suggestions at whay I might be missing?

Junk in the transmission means things don't match.

Make sure that the FIFO buffers are turned off for the ports on the PC.

I would use these settings instead to start with.

9600 bps

7 Data Bits

2 Stops Bits

Even Parity

Xon/Xoff

You should also check each cable for continuity and try transmitting and receiving without the box first.

I think this is a problem. For straight thru 9-25, you need to switch 2/3.

Also, for Haas, set Cimco as e,7,2 and set machine as same. At machine, if you set syncro as "DC Codes" this will allow you to use the cimco "Wait for X-on" option, but XON/Xoff will also work.
