I.D. Oil Groove

I wanted to see what you guys felt was the best way to turn an I.D. Oil Groove. It is basically a large pitch thread made with a full radius grooving tool. I don't have the part drawn yet, but I can try to scan in the print if that would help. I hoped from my vague description, someone might know what I'm talking about. The I.D. of the part is 6.450".

Thanks

The top notch work really well =] I have done this lots, with barely ever an issue. Iscar makes a really good ID grooving bar that we have been using. Basically it's like a parting blade being held in a boring bar. They are very strong, fast, and best of all, the come built for flat for or full radius'd inserts!

Iscar's blade p/n is CGHN-32-5GGM...page 42-44 of the Turning Tools book. The bars are on there as well, and we use a 2" bar for this blade.

Thanks guys.

Calnet - It is a figure 8 type oil groove.

Jeff and Randy - That is how I figured on doing it. Full radius with a threading cycle. The relief angle will definitely be an issue on 1 of the grooves (1 revolution per 3.50")

For the figure 8 do you guys use a thread cycle with 2 starts?
