Solids question

We are looking to upgrade to solids.

If we get an iges of a component from a customer drawn in Pro-e , ideas , solidworks ect what can i expext when opening in Mcam.

ie -will I be able to tell if a hole is tapped ect.

I don't think so. Because these features are CAD dependent. They have their meaning in their own CAD systems. For instance when you translate a tapped hole in SolidWorks to IGES , the resulting geometry is a simple hole.

If you get an IGES file from the customer,It will not be a Solid.

 

As for the threads I would say not by the files that I have been given.

there are sevrl translaters that will bring in solids.

In V9 he can bring in the iges and convert in to a solid.

If you import a solid file (a parasolid, or a ProE file, or an ACIS file for example), features such as tapped holes will only show up as holes.

 

You still need a drawing to define such things as the specs for tapped holes. Its the same for most CAD/CAM systems I'm afraid.

 

AFAIK, upgrading to the Solids option in Mastercam enables you to import geometry as solids, rather than, for example, a parasolid being read in, and converted to trimmed surfaces.

All my geometry comes from ProE. I either use surfaces or solids. But with V9 you can creat a solid from the surfaces, What is a sheet solid?

It doesn't seem to be any different than a surface?

In Pro/E a threaded hole is considered a "Cosmetic" feature and really is just a representation of the threaded form. Also instruct your design departments that a cylindrical cut is not a valid feature for a hole. "A Hole is a Hole".

 

As for the Translators, I use the V9 Pro/E converter (no Solids) and Threaded holes appear only as holes - Trimmed Surfaces of Coarse.

In response to "What's a sheet solid?", for NealZ (and anyone else with the same questions)

 

A Sheet solid can be thought of as a connected set of surfaces that does not form a closed volume. For instance, a cylinder which is capped at one end. Or take any solid body and simply remove a face from it. The result will be a "sheet".
