The levels of Mastercam have evolved from a combination of factors;; sales, the creation of the features, need, and sales. Some guys bought this software when there were no levels (Version1) . When the totally new feature of the 3-d data base was created in the early 80's, the writers of the features wanted to get paid for it, and the guys that had just bought there system wanted to up date to 3-d data base only, and some others wanted everything . So M.C. made the update free to all who owned a system that was called Version 2, but the totally new features (example) -pocket-project, were made into the level 2 and level 3 example take a 2-d set of wire controllers to make a loft surface. So at that time there level 1 was only called Mastercam, and those users received Version2 at level2 Mastercam at no charge(thank you) . If a user wanted the new features he could buy his way to level2 or level 3 and just as important the existing users were not forced to pay for changes they didn't need which would be the case had there been no levels created.

level 1 Some manufacturing companies only need this basic system to make any 2-d shape,.Also it can draw anything, and as a result a user(power user)could program anything, but it would be so time consuming that it would be cheaper to move up level to level 2 and have more power.Level 1 with some proper chooks and solids is a smart purchase .

Level 2 This is another total package,it's basic features are in the middle and has all the 2-d and some 3-d. So if level 2 would make your companies product you would save on the software purchase.

Level 3 MORE POWER

To add to Scott, Level can still do 3-D contour

You ca do some 3-D Old ruled & swept with a level one.

Also with level one you can do some 4 Axis substitution work.

What it comes down to is that level one has no surfacing.

You can create surfaces them self’s.

Level 2 will do single surfacing and do the old

Loft and so on.

As for Level 3 now you can do multi surface and true forth axis along with 5 axis work.
