Best Toolpath for the part

I have a part thats pretty big (24"L * 9"W). There are some ribs that are 2" tall I need to machine around. I would like to knock out the bulk of the Aluminum with a 3" facemill. So far I've tried a few toolpaths (Surface H.S. and Surface pocket) trying to find the most efficient.

What would some of you guys reccomend for this part, with the Little amount of info i've provided. BTW this is on a Haas VMC.

Depends on how many parts, in my opinion.

HST are great for lowering your programming time greatly, but, for me, do not always produce the most efficient program for lowest machine time.

Usually, I use the HST's to get a part running quickly so the boss isn't standing behind me while I program, asking "how much longer? When's it going to be running?" mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

Then, while it's running, I will replace the HST with multiple surfacing ops or other toolpaths to minimize run time.

Sometimes the HST's are the best way to go, sometimes not. It all depends.......

Good luck to you!!!!

I tend to agree with that. It appears that the more curvaceous or complex the surfaces are, more air gets cuts and the path starts to look nutty.

For something like that, try drawing a open box or a L shape, adjacent to the ribs, then use 2d contour with multi pass to get the bulk of the material out of the way, then target the ribs.
