newbie question

Hi Everyone,

 

I've been a long time lurker and figured I might as well cut my teeth. I work for a company called Turbocam (we are NOT a CAM software manufacturer, although we work very closely with CAMPLETE) and do mainly 5-axis impeller work.

 

 

I've been trying to use surface finish parallel to finish an open pocket and I want the tool to flank the walls. I have my check surface stock set to 0 and the tool is staying .015" off one surface and .01" of another.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong??

Are you sure your containment boundry is large

enough to allow the tools to reach the walls?

The containment curve is large enough.

I'm also using X4. If I use a surface finish shallow or a scallop toolpath with the same geometry it works out fine. I just like the pattern better of the parallel/raster pattern

The red surface is the one that I'm cutting while the grey ones are the walls.

 

On another note thanks to everyone who has posted before. There is a TON of great information on here!

I have experienced this same thing. Typically I modified my containment boundary to stay inside the walls(.025 or so) I wanted to cut with the raster motion then create some wireframe geometry to do a surface finish project or surface finish blend along the walls seperately. This also allows me to climb or conventional cut the wall as I prefer.

 

Doesn't help your current situation, but might offer you an alternative.

Thanks for the help MLS. I'll give the surface finish project a go and see what that gives me.

Your step over and or tolerance may be keeping the cutter from fully covering the surface. Change the step over and read the code. See if that helps.
