Boring a lot of 316ss with 3/8 indexable CCMT 1/4 IC

insert. Right now we've been using Widia's SS grade and the tool life has been pretty sad. Iv'e gone from 300 to 800 sfm and .004 to .008 ipr staying with .015 DOC. Bar stickout is about 4d. I'm wondering what you guys have been using on this stuff. We used to cut this stuff pretty often and I don't remember it being this bad. Maybe we've got a little soft with all the 7075 and 303 comin through. biggrin.gif Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

MIke

So you almost tripled your SFM and doubled your feedrate? I confused

The smaller the TNR the better with stainless for the most part. We don't do much austenitic SS but typically we run cermet for finishing, which is what I'm assuming you're talking about.

400-450SFM would be the max for reliability on that material, I would think

That's where we saw the best tool life. The widia rep insisted on 800sfm and we preceded to watch it make about 10 parts before throwing in the towel.
