MC will not however open a solidworks file that multiple parts in it such as a sldasm. file. it will open that file as long as there's only one part in it. at least that's been my experience? am i right guys?

Incorrect.

If you are trying to open an asm file, you DO need to have all of the part files that make the assembly in the folder with the asm file.

A SolidWorks assembly file can be made up of a thousand different sldprt files..

The assembly file just tells SW how it all goes together.

If your customer just sends you the sldasm file you won't be able to open it because the supporting files aren't there..

There are several ways to send an assembly file .

the easiest is Save as X_B .. everything included in the SW assembly will be in one parasolid that Mastercam can open with no problem

If you want to send native solidworks assemblies

in SolidWorks..

Files

Find References

then

Copy Files

and pick a location..

Solidworks will collect a copy of every file in the assembly and copy it to folder you selected..

or

you can also use the SW utility Pack and Go

Files/Pack and Go

Solidworks will collect all the files.. put them in a single folder and even zip the folder if you choose to..

personally, I prefer Save As X_B...

its simple and the Parasolid kernal is the native solids kernal for both MC and SW..

File translation errors are very rare with this method.
