cutting from .stl

hi,

 

i'm cutting a 3d surface from an stl.- 3 axis cutting. solids and surfaces i understand and can play with in solidworks but an stl is like a ghost. all i can do with it is select it as a drive surface. what i really need to do is intersect it with a surface, create an intersection curve and cut a countour line around some of the features.

can you do this without a standalone stl editor?

How about the stl2surf chook? It's on the chooks folder

Get yourself a copy of Rhino 3D.

It works exceptionally well with STL file and surfaces.

You'll have a much easier time modeling what you need in Rhino.

Mastercam can open the native Rhino file so no translator is needed.

manual, is that chook in x5? i couldn't find it in the folder.

Yes, it's on the Chooks folder but it's on the FTP if you can't find it.

That C-hook will not work in Mastercam X series this from V9 and earler. and your link willnot work as it does not contaion user and password.

From my experience an stl is pretty much useless for machining, you can do some things but.... I believe Verisurf has a way of converting an stl to surfaces.

lol, thanks jay, I didn't know that, I always remodel everything on solidworks so i didn't know that about that Chook. just trying to give some help
