Wide thread

We have to machine a 1.33" wide thread (straight wall) on a 2.362 tpi feedrate.

I assume I can just use a sub program and make a Z move, and re-run the cycle to make it wider.

 

My issue is the relief on the helix angle because the pitch is so fast.

We want to use a 1/8" or 5/32" wide od groove tool or maybe a face groove tool

 

Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how to account for the tool relief?

Can you mill an angle on the back of the tool holder to get the extra clearance?

I would think if you knew the major diameter, and you know the picth you could turn that into and angle. then figure out what you need for a relief angle on your tool bit? Just an idea.

Yeah that's what we are going to do, but not with a mill, with the super accurate pedestal grinder

this is by far the easiest/fastest way

 

an angle grinder directly in the machine will adjust it to a precise fit !

HAH! that is true.

we're just going to put a test piece of aluminum in the lathe and relieve the tool as needed.
