Ok, I think it's because the line I am chaining doesn't lie flat in the Cplane.....

I didn't realize it is off like .002 in z from 1 end to the other and just read the 2d chamfer depth cut issue thread & freaked out!!

Whenever the 3d option pops into that dialog the ramp option disappears, so yeah if the line / spline / curve is not planar it wont let you ramp..

 

To be honest though.. I cant think why it shouldn't from a machining perspective.. but I imagine the math probably gets pretty sketchy trying to handle ramping a complex 3d contour..
