Setting a Plane on a curved part?

You "can" using Dynamic planes

 

The biggest question is do you need and "accurate" placement or a "normal" placement

 

Click on Planes >> Dynamic Planes, place the gnomon anywhere, now click and hold the triangle tip on the Z axis and drag it to you curved surface. It will now start moving along and keeping the Z normal to the surface.

Nice JParis! I use dynamic planes all the time and had no idea you could do that. I was going to tell him a method I use with the xform project where you can project a point off the surface and create a vector line that we could use for plane creation purposes but this way seems much easier and you can still snap to a point on the surface.
