Have you ever used the newer flavors of ubuntu or fedora? They're extremely easy to use and perfect for everyday internet/mail/im stuff. Now freeBSD, not so easy. But Mac OSX is perfect for everyday stuff.

Linux and unix have been the underdog for years since microsoft created its monopoly. I wonder why all the supercomputers in the top 500 list run linux/unix

Yea basically. But with modern virtualzation, its like running it nativly. Like with VMware virtual machines, I can take a snapshot of my active virtual machine. When solidworks or mastercam releases a update, I take a snappy and load in the updates. That way I can test it to see if I like it and yet still can use the snapshot as a active virtual machine and have access to the old "stable" software. Plus in the mac os, virtual machines can take advantage of open cl gpu computing and be sent to a xGrid cluster computing network to up the speed of your virtual machine. Like I have said before, Virtual machines know no bounds. The amount of ram they can access is dependent on what you wanna give them. Their cpu's can be dependent on cluster networks and be whatever you want them to be. I am a huge supporter of virtualzation (and cybernetics) and personally feel its going to take off once win 7 turns into vista. It's finally linux's and unix's time to shine once again.

Jajaan! here's the mobo you'd want. Kinda serverlicious if ya ask me.
quote:i would love to move to apple but i dont know how much of my software is supported.lol in mac os? NONE!
But mac's have the capability to bootcamp (dualboot) and run virtual machines that are hardware accelerated. So technically they will run everything and at the same time not.
I use virtual machines for solidworks and mastercam. They run fine on my mac pro.

I would move to intel. Stick with intel socket 1366 for your processor/motherboard because intel's coming out with a 6 core "istanbul" processors very soon. Or you can wait a month and buy the new mac pro But intel socket 1366 will have the most upgradability over it's life time.
In other words, Intel.

quote:Save a complex solid Mastercam file in solid only. Then, create surface from solid, get a complete surface model of the part, and delete the solid. Save this file. Now go look at the properties of those 2 files (ie file size), exact same GEO only solid vs surface.
Have you read my cluster computer's spec's in my siggy? I've had huge solid models that I toolpath off of and it doesnt hinder my performance. I'm not against converting to surfaces or using a dumb solid to free up resources. It's just mu2 handles toolathing complex solids just fine. All you need is the comp to handle it which kinda goes hand in hand with cad/cam.

quote:I think I stated that I work with solids and you and rickster and a few more said I should use surfaces.
rick said that. I said I work with solids.

somethings wrong with your box or the cad file.
One thing I have noticed is that alot of people toolpath off surfaces instead of solids here. And those are the same people that have the crashes. I program off nothing but solids and have no problems.
Also when I say I stress tested it, I REALLY churned and burned. Almost threw my mac cluster into thermal protection. lol.

Come on, give cnc a break. They got this release out fast for us and I'm appreciative. This release is stable for me. I've tried to crash it today. It won't!
So I say thank you cnc software.

Here's the instructions:

:shivers:
For single computer, bootcamp is the way to go. But for my network, virtual machines are the winner. I'll write a tutorial on how to install windows to a secondary boot drive tonight. Bootcamp will only partition your main drive.

Not until I get done with it !
That's why we mac's have bootcamp capability's and virtual machines.

but the twitter feed said mu1 was released yesterday... Someones working overtime at cnc!
to your hard work code monkeys! Now lets see if it works!

For native support you'll need to bootcamp (dual boot) or run it in a virtual machine (my preference). But first, I would upgrade to snow leopard. The 64 bit filesystem is worth its weight in gold. For virtual machines, I use VMware fusion 3. You can then set it up for a windows machine to run at 4 processors and set it at 4GB of ram.
Also if your IT guy tried to install a exe then said it wont work, get a new it guy. Windows is nt mac is unix.
Welcome to the world of apple.
