But I encountered issues today with programming a helix entry for dynamic mill.  Using a .750 endmill and helixing into a .500 wide slot.

I think I am more curious as to how you're using a .750" endmill to helix into a .500" slot.

  2. I'm not sure you can any longer.

The training versions timeout after so long,  about 18 months.

If that's changed,  someone will chime in and correct me.

I would take a hard look at Hypermill.

I have no personal experience with it....I have heard the software itself is excellent, especially for 5 axis work....

I have also heard that if you gag a little on the cost of NX, that the cost of Hypermill will choke you until you are blue in the face.

  4. I prefer to teach someone using a file of theirs...so much YouTube content, some is really good, some falls into hack territory...I don't bother with it anymore.

    There is no straightforward answer...

How much stock after roughing?  Varies, are there other operations to be perform, stress relieving, cryo, going to another machine for finishing...and more

How much stock to leave after after semi?  Again, see above but then add material type, allowance for part movement...and more

Stepover?  Size of tool, style of toolpath used, material, finish requirements...there are scallop calculators out there... flat surfaces general cut paster with flat or bullnose, geometry dependent...

and for all of the above....machine abilities...what can it hold?

There are more answers to these questions than just X, Y, Z

    is it free?

    No

It used to be but several years back they began charging what I am told is mostly a nominal fee..it cost time & effort to keep it up and add things to it

Ok, so as a summary, you pay approximately 30k for the software, and also for each machine x$.
    it's right?

Get a quote from them...see what it all entails....no, it's not cheap, our purchase was substantially costlier, more than 2x's,  but we added other things as well.

Only through working with them will you get a clear picture.....

You're a contractor....ask yourself this, what happens if a machine crashes and the customer comes back on you for recompense? Are you insured? Have you taken every step possible to ensure a crash doesn't happen through any code created by you?

In its truest sense, Parametric just literally means "driven by parameters."

    Simplest

I understand what you're going for it however, it doesn't truly align with what is a "Parametric" modeling CAD system.

Mastercam is an Etch-a-Sketch compared to a parametric CAD system.

It is functional, it does work. You can do some pretty trick things with it....it does however take a lot more to get stuff done

Lately we have had a few customers (even a big aerospace one) give us only .PDF prints and no CAD files whatsoever.

I certainly hope your front office is quoting that NRE for that work

Also, from my understanding talking to a few SolidWorks guys "parametric" they use referring to some form of spreadsheet or table that can drive geometry with formulas and such? Am I off base with that?

You can use spreadsheets to drive different configurations of parts, you can use formulas to dimensions, you can define a single dimension as a variable and then tie many things to that single variable....

The Push/Pull in Mastercam is akin to utilizing a blow torch and butter knife...yes, it works but it is a rudimentary tool..

One of my guys was timid over bringing on Solidworks for our design work...now that he's up to speed on it, he wouldn't go back.
