keyways

I need to cut several keyways in 1045 shafting (3/16,1/4,3/8,1/2" widths) does any recomend a specific type of endmill that will work good and stand up in production. Also they would like the keyways to be .002 - .004" oversize. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I like Dataflute and Robb Jack. Also, use a STUB length cutter. This along with holding the tool with a little as possible extending out of the holder will maximize rigidity on that end giving better surface finishes and longer tool life.

For production I prefer OSG exocarb or exocarbSHP depending on your tooling budget. But most importantly make sure to use a 3 flute. This will ensure that no 2 flutes are ever in contact with the walls at one time allowing good chip evacuation especially if your trying to do it in one pass.

Good Day,

+1 James...shorter the better

I also feel an od # of flutes produces

less harmonics in the finish ...3 or 5 flutes

Go check out ph HORN company at www.hornusa.com. They have tools that can broach the part while its still in the lathe. I don't know much about their tools but saw their ad in Modern Machine Shop. Maybe you plan on doing this on a c axis lathe with a end mill, in which case probably follow everyone elses advice. But if it would be a second operation maybe this could save some time.
