Work offset in pallet programs for 5axis machines

Recommended Posts

Is it good practice to put the work offset in the top of the program?

For example our mam72 has 2 production jobs that use g54 and kinematic zero so they use the same offset.

A third job is using 55 and 56 but doesn't run multiple pallets.

It would be a small safety measure

I think it is a good practice; provided your Operators are also trained that "you make Work Offset Adjustments by editing the NC Program File".

I often use the "best of both worlds", where I will hard-code the Work Offset Values in the top of the NC Program, but then will call a Probing Routine, to "adjust the work offset". You do have to be careful of Program Restarts, afterwards, because you don't want to "reset the Work Offset", after you've successfully Probed the location.

For that reason, when I'm doing Probing, I will put the G10 line "inside" the code for the Probing routine. That way, the G10 line only gets read if the Probe is being run.
