Pocket Island Facing

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the island facing feature to work at all.

 

I chain the outer boundary and the islands inside, set my parameters including the pocket type, and while the results pocket around the islands, there is no facing.

 

Switching back to the standard pocket type gives me the same results.

 

What am I missing?

Make sure your island chain is at a z depth that is below the top of your stock and above your pocket depth.

your main boundry can be at depth or at Z0, now for the ilands at least the top of them need to be at the Z hight needed to be finish at.

Little trick on Island Facing. I can never get it to do what I want. I do a normal pocket and then set my leave staock at -.1 or -.2 so I get the overlap off the part I am looking for.

Create the island geometry at the final z depth, set the pocket type to island facing and check the box in front of Use island depths in the Depth cuts dialog box.

My error, I just assumed it worked with 2D geometry.

When you say you cannot have a 2d profile, do you mean any 2d chain? I just used this function, and I used only 2d chains and was able to get a pocket with island facing. To get it to work, I had to make sure the island chain was at the correct depth in relation with my pocket.

leehound is right, you can use 2D geometry just draw the outside of the pocket at depth and then place the tops of islands at their corresponding depths. for instance click on the "Z" button on the secondary menu and type in the depth of the pocket and then draw the outside wall of the pocket. next chang the "Z" depth to an island top and draw island. when you run the pocket toolpath change pocket type to island facing and under the depth cuts button activate "use island depths", that should do it.
