O/T Dear Carboloy user.........

Hi guy's,

 

Questions:

I am running a 1" 3 Flute insert cutter. 75% stepover and .075 depth of cut. Under good conservetive running in tool steel. How long would you think the insert should hold up?

I am just looking for some kind of guidens.

From 3 different manufacturers I am told anywhere from 20 minutes to 1-1/2 hour depending on the application. Lately we here have been trying to optimize speeds and feeds on our cutters to get 30 minutes of insert life. JM2C

Does your machine have enough horsepower for you to take bigger depth of cuts and maybe less stepover? The reason being is that the extra wear on the corner of the insert. This was explained to me by a carboloy rep that I used to deal with. And he always told me 20 minutes constant cutting life per corner

i always shot for 30 min in the cut !!!

30 to 45 min. is good rule ..depth cuts may help..

Not having any experience I thought that you easily could get 1,5 to 2 hours out of a pair, thought the Carboloy guy was pulling my leg.

I agree with everyone here but Tim stated the key to maximum insert life and productability.

As long as the machine will do it, bury it! Long ago I was using an Ingersoll 12J1B in 1" diameter and figured this out. Running on reasonable equipment, like a very serious CV40 machine(A-55) or of coarse a CV50 machine you can just bury it to the max depth and push it to the limit. This will always give the most parts per insert.

I called Carboloy monday, and the tec. guy told me that he would not take more than 0.1 depth of cut, so I stayed conservertive, after reading your comments I called them back, and was told that I should go 0.4 deep.
