I agree with everyone here but Tim stated the key to maximum insert life and productability.

As long as the machine will do it, bury it! Long ago I was using an Ingersoll 12J1B in 1" diameter and figured this out. Running on reasonable equipment, like a very serious CV40 machine(A-55) or of coarse a CV50 machine you can just bury it to the max depth and push it to the limit. This will always give the most parts per insert.
