Meehanite

Meehanite is a cast iron and it machines like butter. If possible machine dry or use a constant low pressure air blast because if you use coolant the chips are going to turn to mud. Run all speeds and feeds the same as gray cast iron and watch out for break thru of holes, it has a tendency to chip.

Sweet stuff to machine but my heart still belongs to Ledloy.

Having seen the long term effects of abrasive materials on machining centers accuracy and resale values the aforementioned advice about machining dry is right on target.

The high carbon content of cast iron depending on alloying and cooling can present as graphite and carbides. Add water to the often micro fine chips and presto have an abrasive slurry circulating in your machine. Yummy.

For the occasional user dry machining with compressed air, a big shop vac opposite the air and a cheap plastic painters tarp inside the enclosure. Then fold up the plastic when you are finished. No worries

We had a request from a scientist here at work to produce a pile of cast iron chips (he called them filings). No problemo. I just dropped the quill stop on my trusty bridge port and let that drill bit just bore its way right down into the tabletop! Scooped up the chips. put em in a box . "here you go sir". Service with a smile! Damn is Bridgeport looking a little ragged lately. Hmmmmmm. j/k biggrin.gif

THe request for Iron chips is true 'tho. Happened yesterday. Our raw stock guy got out a cast iron bar and set it up in a band saw. another satisfied customer!

we get some weird sh!t
