wire no core

What do you guys/gals use for stepover with .01 (.25mm) wire when pocketing a "no core" wirepath ? I started at 50% but I have no idea what's best...

I normally use .008 stepover with .01 wire. A good tip when you are using nocore is to slow down your feedrate.

i been running wires for 10 years and programming for around 5 years and i never did a nocore...what is advantage and/or what is it you are cutting..

The advantage is no slug to worry about. I use it for small die cavities where the slug can be a pain.

When I wire with no core I always use a step over of half the wire diameter and have had no problems at all.

i'm going to try that!!we usually just added

more passes in the main program and virtually ran slugless, but this looks interesting and i will do some test burns and try it..

Most of the time I am doing nocore it is holes, many times I deside to create the geometry myself. I only run nocore when the slugs can be trouble because of size, WEDM is a very expensive process, do not want to have the machine to run overtime just because I am lazy and do not want to drop a sluck.

A warning:

If you use Mcam nocore function, make sure that it is nocoring your part, I have tryed a couple of complex parts were Mcam missed a portion, and I ended up with a unexpected sluck, now I got to say that I am running Mcam 8.1.1 in wire, so things could have been improved in 9.

Consumables cost quite a bit to run a wire machine, as such about the only time I will use this is when the machine is set to run 10+ hours overnight unattended.

 

When I do use this, I usually run 75% step, and never use this on anything larger than .080" to .090" holes or slots.

 

Plus if the tollerance is tight - you have to make 2 or 3 skim passes with our machine or you end up with a tapered hole for some reason?

In case anybody cares, the job went great. It consisted of .09 x .14 slots with .06 start holes in center. I actually may have ended up with 2 slugs per slot if I cut this with CONTOUR.

 

I programmed the job at 50% stepover.
