.obj file extension?

The boss sent me some files with .obj extension. He insists they are 3D models he got off the web and I should be able to open them. I can't get to the webpage he gave me to check them out. I've never run across .obj files before and can't seem to find any documentation on them. Can anyone offer any insight?

The only OBJ files I know of wouldn't be what you're after, unless you're programming with C or C++ Maybe Google it.

.obj file extentions were used in C/C++, as an intermidate pre-compiler extention before being created into an .exe or .dll file or application. I've never know it to stand for a CAD type file extention.

Yeah, the only .obj stuff I am familiar with is C++ as well. That's also what google came up with. Could the .obj's be used in CG animation? That's my best guess--he googled 3d models and ended up at one of those sites that sells models for graphics/animation purposes.

He (boss) is obviously mixed up, but that's a whole other thread.

From looking at some of the results that Google returned, it looks like it's a file type associated with Lightwave, which could very well contain 3D models.

Much of the stuff on this site has an .obj extension. Cool stuff, but none of it's useful from a manufacturing standpoint.

Bullines is correct the file is most likely an Alias Wavefront file, it will not be much use to you as the file will be a poly mesh (STL) format.

obj files open good in maya. May be you can come across a converter which will convert it to 3ds or igs. though igs will be 100 - 1000 times larger than original.

rhinoceros should be able to open those obj files.

you can get a free trial version (good for 30 file saves) at www.rhino3d.com. you can export them as igs or something similar MC will read from there....
