to start the tool on the center of the hole I use the center for the start and end point and use a small radius for lead in. I dont put in a line length. it starts and ends in the center and doesn't need the line length.

I was always told to use a straight line when turning cutter comp on or off. I know if you use a radius on a Okuma in the comp line it will alarm out. Also fanuc's sometimes have the same trouble.

I believe billystein was referring to Circle Mill parameters. There is a "Start at center" switch but not a Lead In/Out button like a contour. The toolpath will produce a line move as the first move after the plunge to depth as long as the arc radius and sweep value are small enough to allow the motion. If the tool is close to the finish diameter of the hole being interpolated, set the Entry/Exit arc sweep value to "0.0" and turn "Start at center" on. This will force a linear move. Wear comp is ideal in this situation as you don't need more than the radius of the tool for the first comp move.

I was refering to the lead in and out in contour.

use start point and end point. omit the line length and use a small rad.

It works great.

I used oldirish 's formula today and it is the bomb no more dinking with getting it close "enough".

Here is another formula that I use, 50+% line added to rad of hole divide by 2 with 180 deg.sweep = dead on center

p.s. this toolpath does not backplot correctly. only the entry and exit arc show, but it works fine.

Our Haas-fadal's hold about .0005 (per side)

Our OKK's are a bit better, but we still have to fuss with them for any real true positioning.

This is my method (when it's practicle)

I put a point in the center and use it as the first chain, and the full circle for the second chain. I use both entry and exit lines and arcs with entry and exit points checked.

Sometimes I still have to useboreing heads,custom carbide form tools, and reamers. There just doesn't seam to anything that works for everything.

I've been using pocket/true spiral set to spiral inside to outside with fin pass turned on using like 20% lead on line and 10% on arc. No problem holding .0002 - .0003 round. HTH !
