insert nose radius for 316 s.s.

For you stailess guys, what insert nose radius do you think is best for 316 s.s. I don't do much stainless and I am currently using a 1/32 R.

.031 rad should be good for 316.

 

What grade of inserrt will be very important.

 

How much rough stock removal are you doing?

What size is your part? Generally the bigger the radius the better off you'll be. This changes drastically as the part becomes smaller though.

Goemetry is more important than nose rad for SS.

If it's long or slender use 02 or 04 rad.

Roughing 08 is good.

Tim is right the bigger the nose rad the faster you can feed for same surface finish.

Then there are wipers too, generaly twice the feed rate.

the part is 1 1/2 hex stock. I am turning one end to a 1.031-14 thread a 1" back. Only done one so far and it cut good. I was curious if a 1/64 R. would be better

using a Iscar insert for S.S.

Are you programming using CSS or RPM? Using CSS will yield better results (tool life & finish). At your RPM you are running about 200 SFM. A little slower than I would run. Look on the back of your Iscar box of inserts and it should give recommended feeds and speeds for different materials. If the SS box is blank, than look it up in the book.

 

I would start it at 400 SFM with .010 feed for rough and leave your finish where it's at. The hex gives you an interrupted cut for the first pass or two, so the larger radius is better for that.

Mr. Simmermon got it right. If you're facing and taking more than .030 I would cut that feed to .004.
