does mastercam have a chook for putting bolt tap & dowel holes in solids

You probably are looking for something like the SolidWorks Hole Wizard. Haven't seen it in Mastercam. I would send your enhancement request to QC.

are you only modelling a solid for someone else or is this solid to be machined in your shop once its modelled? if you are manufacturing this part after you model it, then id say you might want to look into prodrill v2 for mastercam x mr2 or prodrill v1.2 for mastercam 9.x. you only need holes, points, or whatever you prefer and you can have prodrill create the spot drill tap, spot, drill, ream, etc. drill forms automatically and it will also create the toolpaths for you.
