Hard steel machining

Hey Guys..

I'm quoting on a job that requires us to counterbore 2" dia. holes 1-1/2" deep into liner plates with 400 BHN min. I'm used to aluminum and mild steel on our mill, and not really familiar with speeds/feeds for hard steels. Any recommendations for speeds and feeds, so I can run an acurate backplot for the quote. I have 2000 holes to do.Also what tooling recommended.

Thanks Gus

Just recently run some duramax rods with a bore of 2.5" in 4340. Used seco feed mill 1.5" S1528 F183.

Took about 30 seconds to rough this hole.

Hardmill is right again, thats the fastest and easiest way, unless you've got some serious hp to use drills that big wink.gif

edit:

if you go with seco-carboloy, for 2.00 bore you'd need 1.0 or 1.25 feedmill.

It's best to get a local rep to bring a tool for a test. Some people can't stomach those feeds wink.gifbiggrin.gif
