Problem with my threadmill

hi gang again,

Gonna bombard the group with questions. Don't have alot of time these days, so when I get a chance I have to send in a few questions/problems that I have had over the month :-)

First time threadmilling. Described my tool, exactly as the manufactured stated including the insert. Part was drawn to the exact size of the external boss that I was threadmilling (had sample and go, no-go guages) But when machining the actual part, I was out/oversize by about .300 on the dia. I had to lie about the cutter size to compensate the error. Any suggestions as to what I did wrong??????

I seem to have similar problems when I describe my 45deg tools.

Thanks again

Geo

You should be able to see the position of your cutter using backplot. Backplot should show you if your cutter is correct or not. Is your thread mill created as a seperate MC9 file or is it on a level in your part file? Pay no attention to the wording in the help file about your tool being drawn at 1". Just draw it actual size and put the correct diameter value in the tool definition dialog box. The profile should show the yellow dashed line tangent to the tooth profile in the custom tool dialog box.

By the way, any thoughts on upgrading to version X2? There are options now for multiple passes on thread milling for X. Just a thought. V9 is dying slowly...

I'm excited for the days when V9 is no longer supported by CNC software. biggrin.gif

Thanks,

Hi, I think I approached threadmilling all wrong. My tool was just a 1/2 dia cutter, but I put in all the tool data when I picked the threadmilling op. Guess I should have created a tool huh? Which is better, creating a seperate MC9 file or as a level on my part file?? Which I have never done by the way :-)

Thanks, and yes, we have thought of upgrading, the timing is just not right :-(

Thanks again

Geo
