Peck drill rule of thumb?

Is there a rule of thumb for peck drilling? I machine a lot of 6061 T6 aluminum and I'm not sure what the optimum peck values should be for the first and subsequent pecks (~1/8" drill). Any ideas?

in 6061, I generally peck about 75% of the diameter of the drill BUT, type of drill, depth of hole and other things can play into that factor as well.

 

I use Parabolic flute Guhring drills

Depends like John said. I personally like parabolic drills as well and can push it harder than a standard drill and increase me pecks. Standard drill a peck it .02 to .05 to make sure I am getting the coolant to the drill to keep it from sticking.

1XD for 'normal' applications; I run 3XD or so with 'high performance' Guhring carbide drills because they proved it would work. If you start out relatively conservative on something you think might be demanding for the drill, you can always get more aggressive as you go on; getting half a drill out of a hole is more difficult...

For a hss 1/8" jobber I would go 5xD at 80%, 10xD at 50%, any deeper at 30%. If you're production drilling and have coolant thru, you should invest in some good carbide coolant thru drills. I run mine around 110-130 ipm no pecking. They're about $80.00 each but will easily pay for themselves.
