Ultem Resin

Recommended Posts

I've got a couple of Ultem parts still in my toolbox from previous employ.

I found in was abrasive on carbide, not real bad but it will wear if you are doing qty. I also found it did NOT like being drilled. I had deep holes to drill in it and even with short pecks and flood coolant, if I was not careful if would melt on the end of the drill. So there were a "few" programmed stops to get the chips off of the drills and clear th hole out.

Look at this (http://www.boedeker.com/). Lots of info on all sorts of plastics. We machine all series of ultem.

1. We use 2/3 radial x .04 max depths for roughing leaving .02 stock all over.

2. Reclamp part lightly to semi finish .

3. Semi finish with fresh tool to leave .002 stock all over.

4. Finish with fresh tool using 2 to 3 spring passes on the walls only.

Best advice I could give you about ultem is its alive. Meaning it moves all over the place.
