HELP CUTTING DRUM CAM GROOVE

I need to cut a drum cam groove but the center of the tool fallows the center of rotation when I chain side wire. I need the tool to cut off center. I messed with multiaxis curve but Im doing something wrong slot has taper. Do I chain the center line of the cam groove HELP!

I have machined this type of part in the past, didn't make any money on the job. We ended up using a jig grinding head mounted in the spindle of a VMC. For correct geometry you have to use a full dia tool.

Use ROLLDIE to cut the groove from the CENTERLINE (I was shouting). For barrel cams, you have to drive the groove each way. The tool axis offsets from each point will be parallel to each other, so a follower will drop in the groove. The cam generators in MISC... could help to build a smooth centerline. Send me a file if you need more help.

Sorry about your experience, Tony. I've only seen the need for a full size cutter once, because the groove was pretty deep. Almost-full-size cutters will work OK for most grooves.

Thanks to all for the info. John is correct driving the tool on center both ways of the groove works. But around some outside radi in the groove in transion to helical to straight it seem to cut too much but i made it work. Maybe my geo was not correct. This forum stuff is new to me thank again its nice to get some imput when your boss is breathing down your neck.
