The art of the post

I've been messing around with some post files that we have here at our facility with varying degrees of success. I wish I understood better how the files worked, or even where to get more information about writing posts.

How would I go about educating myself on the topic. What is the scripting language? Are there places that can teach you how to write? Any information would be appreciated.

Practice, Practice. Practice, and then some more Practice. As with anything doing and trying seems to help the most in my case. I have the post reference guide, but been along time since I have needed to look at it to modify a post to my liking. Also the MPMASTER and MPLMASTER(IF doing complex lathe work) is a great post in which to learn from as well. CNC does not like ot hear that a dealer has better post than they do, but IMHO they are the best for Mastercam hands down and we use one of their posts for the INTEGREX we have.

Start simple keep notes keep examples, I have over 200 printed pages off the forum from over the years with that I thought we great examples. I think there is even a Word doc on the FTP when some of the stuff I saved over the years.

Oh yeah this place is probably your greatest resource for questions, problems, and help.

I believe you can download the Vr.9 Post processor reference guide from cadcam's FTP (see link at top) It's in the "MCX Post Stuff" directory and is called "Version 9 MP Post.zip"

It is a valuable tool when first starting post modification.

One little recommendation, make sure to make a backup of the post file before you make your edits. That way you can always go back to where you were.

Minor changes are pretty easy once you start to get a feel of how the post works. If you aren't sure what is going on where, simply add an output line in the postblock you are working on to see if it shows up where you think it should. A line like

"here", e$

came in pretty handy.

Reference the forum and ask questions. The guys here are very helpful and many of them have been through what you are doing.

Good luck
