Tapping

I have to push a 30mm x 3.5 tap thru a block of 1018 CRS, any recommendations on speeds and feeds? I'm running a Mori Dura Vertical. I have no experience with metric taps and since this is so large I would like a second, third or fourth opinion. Right now I have it programmed for 2100.0 feed at 600 rpm.

Thanks

Roll Form, Cut tap?

You say through so I guess a cutting tap. How thick?

Are you programming the feed in MM?

I'd likely start a tap that size about 250 RPM with a feed of 27.55905 IPM to start.

That's a good size tap with a good amount of cutting pressure. at 600 I would be concerned of heating and burning the tap out.

Depending on the required depth I might actually think about threadmilling instead.

I have not visited the forum in a while but what happened to the Patriot's logo?

I loaned it to Jammer for the week. He made the mistake of betting on the Steelers biggrin.gif

I'll take it back out come playoff time

WHat kind of machine are you going to attempt this on, you will need some "power" behind it to drive that tap, you also might consider peck tapping it to break the chip, otherwise you might have some breakage issues going that deep with no chip breaking occurring.

It's a good size tap so my concern here is if the hp is available. It would be quite the workout for our duramill, but I'm not familiar with 5080 model (hp?)

If hp is not there, adding Q (of no more then 1 turn ) should do the trick and thankfully it's just 1018 wink.gif

And like John said, try to stay below 250 rpm (still worried about available torque at this rpm though headscratch.gif )
