Rick, we've had good luck with surgical tubing, 1/8" -1/4", available many places, including McMaster Carr here on West Coast. Just machine a groove same width as tube and .02-.03" shy on depth and provides pretty good seal for many applications.

What kind of vacuum pump do you use? Did you build your own plate/ chuck or buy one?

I pretty much do the same as Bruce but use EPDM Foam Rubber Cord, cheap and works great.

jford we have central vac here, I am designing a universal base plate, and interchangeable tops with 6 zones for smaller top plates.

where I use to work we used a real nice seal, it still fit in the standard groove but the seal itself had a little flap on top. so if you were looking at a cross section it looked like a box with the lid open to about 45 degrees.

Jford yes it is aluminum, I used steel tubing with taper fittings. we pull 30 on the vac I cant remember the measurement symbol

I'm using silicone fuel tubing, I buy it on Ebay for US$20 +P&P for a 50 foot roll. 6mm is more stable for lateral movement resistance, than the 5mm, due to greater wall thickness. For a pump, I'm using a Nash 3KW liquid ring pump, which produces up to 14.5 PSI of vacuum. It is presently operating on a 3m x 1 m table, for cutting Aluminum honeycomb panel.

I have used a product called flap seal for many years. It is a square rubber gasket that you silicone into a groove. It has a little flap that lifts up under vacuum and seals any imperfections in your part seal surface. I have some at work and could come up with manufacturer, but just did a quick web search and didn't find it. A neat trick with this if you have a hole in the middle of the part that would break the vacuum seal. We put an oring around it!
