Alright i need to drill and tap 200 5/16-18 holes in 304ss 1/4 deep down to 1/2 deep(inches)these are all thru holes. I do not do much SS so i am here for some advice. What type of drills and taps are rigid enough to cut down on breakage and some speeds and feeds would be helpful at least for a starting point. these will be done on an older VF2 prob not the best choice but only one avail. Also I have some floating tap holders but have read (somewhere) that the spd and fd have to be adjusted for the engagement and float of the holder.. I am sure there are some people that can help , I hope. Thanks ...

roll form is good advise if you can as chips from this stuff can be a challenge (with a cut tap)as it is tough material (not hard).

if you do not have rigid tap i think the feed adjustment refered to is to slow the calculated feed just a little. this will load the floating head a little to insure tap is out of hole before traversing to the next.

hss tap should not have a prob with 300 rpm, then bump from their.

use tapping fluid if possable.

11 for OSG drills they ca easily make 3000 holes in SS304

for taping , Emuge roll tap is the way to do and boost your coolant concentration a bit to avoid tap to stick in the hole

and also make shure taht the hole is clean begore tapping

i also use tapping grease(Jokisch) , the machine load simply drop by 25% and toollife can easily triple

but you got to take time to put grease in every hole before tapping
