how to "scrape" out the bottom of a bore on lathe

Greetings,

Our shop makes projectiles for the WSU shock physics group. We start with solid aluminum bar, spade drill it, drill it with a flat bottom spade, and then put it on the CNC lathe to finish the bore. I am trying to remove the flat bottom spade drilling step, so that the projectile will go from the spade drill to the CNC lathe. I'm going to want to finish the bottom of the bore though. So here's my question:

Is there a way in X3 Lathe to cut the bottom of the bore without it telling me that it will crash? I've tried roughing ID, roughing face, and facing. I've played with the stock recognition, lead in/out, plunge parameters, and I've yet to get it. I've posted the file on the FTP site under X3 files. It's called 3 In Projectile.Z2G. When you see the geometry versus the stock, I think you'll know what I'm trying to accomplish. Thanks gang.

Regards,

Steve

Any reason why you have the chains below center and not about Center like you are suppose to for lathe???? I would use the stock chain you have for my material.

Also THANK YOU for doing a .z2g with the Post and Machine definition. I wish more people did this when asking for help. We get the file to help you and then we do no have the same machine definition and then it becomes a chore sometimes to help. SO thank you for doing that I appreciate it!!!!

Thanks for the response.

Do you mean above center? If so, yes. Our machine's tool turret is in the front. To make everything nice, we draw our stuff below center. As for this:

I thought I did. There are 2 levels. level 1 is the stock that I revolved in the stock setup. Level 2 is the finish ID geometry.

Hey Ron,

Well the file I got had nothing defined for the Material

I think if you move the red arrow above that operation, then you should see the stock I have defined. If that doesn't work then the 2D geometry that I used is on level 1. I simply did a revolve in my stock setup. That help?

Weird the file I got did not even have a machine in it. I did all of what I did from scratch. No big deal. I even had a wonderful crash in the process.

I put a file on the FTP for you to look at. CRAZY_PROJECTILEX3.Z2G is it name.

This is what I did. I copied your back chain. I then trimmed it to the Material defined size. I then created a line to come past the drill point out. Make sure you are using a small tool. The bigger the tool the more problem you will have. I then used a finish tool path. I then set the toolpath to move .025 per pass and 14 times. You will be dragging the tool along the face so anything greater that .025 and you are going to have a fight on your hands. Besides it will go quick. Notice I changed the angle to -135 on both operation. This will allow the tool to approach the path at a 45 deg angle to the bore. Straight on or along with cause programs as well. I like to approach my id bores and angle when doing undercutting if at all possible.
