Lathe grooving help...Please!!!

I'm trying to do a simple groove, just plunging down (just like doing a thread relief). I've tried a bunch of things, but the toolpath doesn't go where I want it! When I see the screen that asks how many points define the groove, and I want to pick the midpoint of the bottom of the groove, how do I pick it?

Any help at all is GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks very much for any help!

Respectfully,

Mike R.

Standard rectangular grooves can be defined by 2 points or 3 lines. Irregular shaped grooves need to be chained by using partial chain to define start and end entities.

Take a look in the tutorial books or the on-line help for more info on grooving.

Mike,

Pick the upper right point (OD) for the groove.

Tell it that the groove is the same width as the tool, and set the depth, then turn off finish groove parameters and tell it zero stock to leave on the rough parameter page and it should plunge straight in and rapid out.

I just draw a line down the center of the groove and turn off tip comp. If the groove is wider than the tool just offset the center line to the differnece in the size of the tool and the groove and make two chains. For very wide grooves just offset 2/3 of the tool width until you get as wide as you need, but keep the last pass half the tool width from the edge.
