boundries not closed

I chain geometry for a contour and it works OK. I chain the same geometry for a pocket and it alarms "boundry not closed"????

 

HOW can that be?

Boundaries don't have to be closed to contour them, thus no error???

Are you expecting it to be a closed chain?

 

The new Dynamic toolpath is a bit tricky to do open pockets with, but if you want to give it a go, it is absolutly fantastic.

The start of an open chain will always be at the break, no matter what element you pick for the start. Zoom up on that area - many times I have found a gap of just a few tenths that kept the chain from closing.

Whats the difference in the chain if its a contour or pocket?

 

I want to pocket the chain not contour it.

Analyze the chain, when you click on it do you see 1 green arrow or 1 green and 1 red?

 

A contour toolpath will only cut along the chain you pick, a pocket toolpath will cut all the material inside the chain you select.

1 green arrow. This is just a basic pocket routine,no island etc

thanks Keith but I figured it out. There was a .0005 gap when I zoomed real close. funny thing though I analyzed them both and the z value was correct and the endpoints were the same...IDK, I just understand why the contour worked and not the pocket .

Because the contour started and stopped at the break point. a contour doesn't need a closed boundary, a pocket does.

 

 

The pocket could not chain complete, thus it failed.

 

Sometimes your chaining tolerance can be loosened a bit to complete small gaps like that but it is always best to fix the problem.
