Thinking of returning to Programming

Well, I've always been involved in the Metal Cutting Industry in some manner. Weather it be as a Machinist, Programmer, Applications Engineer for a machine tool builder, or Applications Engineer for Software. It's not exactly what you're talking about but while I was an AE for the machine tool company, IT for Cell Controller integration was about 40% of what I did towards the end. But I eventually found my way back to Manufacturing. I learned a lot while doing the other things that I have applied to my position as a Programmer and it's made me a better programmer, and now I'm almost never "in the box". I stay imformed about new technology and learn more about the technology we currently have available to take advantage of every opportunity to make our parts better, more efficient, and less costly. Which in turn is better for our customer. So in short, had I not taken the time to leave "Direct" manufacturing, I probably would not be as good as I am today.

Hope that answers your question.

Zsolt67,

I can relate. Also I'm in CT as you appear to be. The first thing you should be asking is why all these places seem to be fresh out of cnc programmers. Is it because that line of work has been under alot of pressure from management types that don't respect the position, and think this is a video game, that any previous burger flipping pimply faced teenager can perform? Perhaps with that attitude comes the erosion of the salary base. Sure if you don't mind being under increasing pressure, while working with a shoestring budget, and having to deal with the dregs of society on a daily basis who cant seem find the energy to flush the toilet while they wipe the semi dried contents of thier nasal cavitys on the walls. Then I'd say go for it. But please don't sell yourself short and help management with the continued degradation of our salaries.

I look at it with 2 things in mind:

1) What do you enjoy? (This may not be the #1 priority for most, but it is for me)

2) What will you be secure in and still be able to provide for you family?

For me, it's in manufacturing.

First of all, nominal, that was completely un-called for.. before you go making statements like this please warn me to fasten my seat belt; my ears are still ringing from when I fell over backwards and smacked my head on the concrete floor. eek.gif

Secondly, you're going to find that everywhere, I'm afraid. The 2 most common things in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity. I don't know why some people feel they need to stock-pile it.

'Rekd teh "Stupidity that bad takes teamwork!"

I have to agree with you that this is pretty disgusting, but if you get into the right place, the white people in the office have their own CLEAN bathrooms! wink.gif

Alot of very true, comments, I was in manufacturing for most of my life programming since I was 13, I think that the dealing with the dreggs of society is true in alot of respects, I made very good money consulting in Texas, but I think its drying up or has dried up. I am at the same stage in the IT field now, I had to deal with alot of drunk, ex- drunk, ex- drug addicts that these companies were taking on as cnc machinists, that ws not fun. I do have 20 years of skills behind me, but Im still in indecision.

It's all about the company you work for. The worst thing I have to deal with is IDIOT Engineers that cost me time with my family and could give a $#!+

On the positive side, my direct boss respects us (me included), the General Manager and one of the Presidents of the company respects us and what we do. I am compensated fairly in tangible ways and compensated EXTREMELY well in intangible ways. I would not leave where I am for 6 figures. There's more to life than money.

I am 9.25 miles from work. In SoCal that is miraculous. This right here is HUGE!

But at the end of the day, I can sit back and know I actually had a hand in MAKING SOMETHING besides paperwork. Wich cannot be said about many other jobs.

Good Day,

but lately have ben getting some offers to return. Has anyone gone thru this before?

_____________________________________________

It might be that these offers are people you have worked for before or that you know.

Because I have been in search for "ANY" CNC

programmer jobs for over 10 months.

I find ads for Programmers and CNC process

engineers but what they really want is cnc opperators.

You are from CT and thats not far from where

I am, Southern NH and eastern MA.

I have put out 200+ resumes for CNC prog. and

even High end Senior machinist and most companys

dont even call. And when I call they say they

dont need somone with my Exp....Over Qualified

I found an ad 0n the Internet for CNC programmer

and when I called the Company they said the

Req.s were 4 year collage degree and the job

paid $12 per hour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So true I see so many jobs listed asking for 4 year degrees and wanting to pay Wal-Mart wages.

Just yesterday a head hunter called me for a position in CT, he asked what rate i was looking for, when I told him what I was making in San Antonio he almost passed out, why should I take a job bust my xxxx and not get paid accordingly. I say a employee that is not worrying about his bills day and night will be a better worker. But I am not sure which idiot is setting these crazy low rates.

Only the people who settle to work for such cheap pay. eek.gif

I hate to say it too,but I am also wondering how this trade will play off in 5 to 10 years!

It is a shame that BIG Company's are sending all their work off to china and korea.

Last time (and I do mean the last time)I bought something from china,it fell apart. mad.gif

Hi Zslot67

I find some of this to be true and each shop has a piece of what Nominals describes, but no shop has all of it.

quote:

shoestring budget

It is true there really isn't that much money,or work around right now.

quote:

dregs of society

I am personally an Alkey---17 years---,,,so I guess Nominal means that you may have to work with some Democrats.

quote:

cant seem find the energy to flush the toilet

There is a sign up that says "Flush the Toilet" in two of the last three shops i worked in.

quote:

semi dried contents of their nasal cavity on the walls.

In both shops the guys are using the"Flush the Toilet" sign for this.

quote:

don't sell yourself short

In my Humble Opinion, this is good advise.Be an expert, and charge for it,that means get the top dollar, and be as professional possible.Do not work for any shops that are Pirates.

P.S.

Rekd--, Bullines and Chris,IMHO it was cool that you held a forum member accountable.

One of the reason's there is not work here in CA, is because our dip-sh!t governor has made it almost immpossible for any company to survive here. That is why most mass producing shops will "farm" out to China. I have first hand experience with this also from the golf club making industry. You would not believe how many times a month we would get a call telling us that our complete order was scrapped or our masters got lost rolleyes.gif . What a bunch of poop. I am on my boss now to finish the process of making everything in house or at least keep the business in the states. It drives me nuts to send something over-sea's. No matter what country it is.

Good Day,

I have spoken to owners and Mfg. managers

of companies that are wasting good money

on cheap labor (unskilled set-up and very

low end operators ) and they tell me, they

can not find GOOD CNC PEOPLE.

The bottom line is:

They will not PAY for good CNC people.

I do the math for them:

For another 30 to 35% pay they will have

someone that can think, and I tell them that

at a minimum, this will save them 50% every

day....And the worse part is,

THEY AGREE...but, they end up saying:

"I cant pay that much"
