Facing Cycle: Conventional Face or Peel Mill?

Hey Gang,

 

We have a part that we produce fairly often. It's a small part and we face it using the same 1/2 endmill that we profile with (5 flute Kennametal variable helix tool). One side we take a lite cut but on the second op we face off some hold-on stock.

 

So, I am wondering if a peel mill cycle would actually give us better results than a normal face cycle.

 

What do you guys think?

Depending on the amount of cut depths necessary, it may take longer. You might be able to take a deeper cut if you set it (facing op) to overhang the face more to avoid a deep axial cut and set your stepover very small for light axial cuts.

Also, dynamic facing with small max stepover might give the effect similar to a peel mill.

create an offset entity and use contour + step over, IMHO this is way more efficient and flexible than any other facing method

Peel Mill works good at full depth. It works really good at deep slots.

Sometimes when i use peel mill, i get a funky finish on the floors, especially when im using a stabilizer endmill. (they flex alot)

Yep, that's why I always create another finish operation.

I would check out the Dynamic facing, I've had good results with it.
