Lathe Guys- Dish cutting a face.

What tools do you use? I need to cut shallow and deep dish shapes in the face of several different parts. Who makes tools for this?

I always start by drilling to near depth and then I use full rad face grooving tools that I grind clearance on and cut it in stages. You can some times find face grooving holders that will work for your diameters. Clearance is always an issue.

Thanks guys. A button insert is what I was thinking. Maybe a A4 or smaller with a round form or a small button tool. Talk about something that needs to be devoloped for lathe apps !

When I was turning wheels we used a lot of iscar face grooving tools. The depth and diameter of the cut is critical to selecting the correct tool. Here is a link:

I've been making some parts recently needing large dia shallow concave "dishes" on the faces. We have been able to "face" them using a boring bar with a V or D shaped insert. the bar is unusual because the insert is tilted a little so that the centre line of the insert is at 45deg to the x and z axis creating equal cutting approach angles to the faces and diameters. with this tool we have been able to face the cavity out by starting at the OD with a face plunge then facing the stock away to the centreline and continuing to work it out. Most of our tooling is SECO, so you could hunt their website to see if you can find one.

Trepanning is the best way. I have used Iscar face grooving tools on many occasions with great success. Boring bars with large frontal clearance can work too depending on the geometry.

I made wheels at Optima Wheels in Santa Fe Springs, that was forever ago....Did a little time at J.E. Pistons too...
