Best CAT40 and CAT50 toolholders for HSS jobber drills?

Recommended Posts

We use Command ER collet holders for drills (cutting soft and semi-hard H13) and the guys on the floor say that no matter how hard they torque them the drills keep pushing up into the holder. I suggested collet nuts with bearings and the boss said it's been tried and didn't help. Is there a better type of holder for this application, or do I need to back off on chipload?

Are they getting them over 100ft/lbs? I'm not sure about Command, but Techniks recommends 100ft/lbs of torque. Unless they have the fancy spanner attachment on a big torque wrench or breaker bar, they might not be getting them tight enough.

Also, what size drills are pushing back?

Er-32? I'd bet something else is going on. Do the drills have the size stamped on them (vs printed)? If so that will severely limit clamping force and make runout horrific. Are the collets clean and burr free? Are the drill shanks burr free? Anything less than good smooth shanks and new collets = slippage no matter how hard you tighten or what kind of nuts.

I used to use an ultrasonic cleaner for everything, then dip collet and nut in wd-40 before install. Allowed a much more consistent torque.
