bucket, I ramp al the time, even face mills, check out Iscar feed mill, KICKS METAL eek.gif

we run it at 300/600 IPM .06 depth cuts in 30/40 RC 4140 and yes with ramp

You can ramp [or helix, which is just a round ramp] with a non-center cutting tool as it is the cutting edge of the tool that is encountering the material to be machined [remember that "flat" endmills aren't really flat on the bottom]. You just need to keep the angle reasonable and you should be cool. Plunging, on the other hand, can be a problem... eek.gif

Yeah Bucket you can even do it when inserted endmills most have an angle allowable in the selection page when you look in the book. Some areas saml las 3 degree some are as great as 30 degree I play attention to that also when buying inserted cutters.

 

I also cut tapered keyways in big shafts like 8 to 24 in diamater sure beats trying to hold the shaft at an angle.
