Help with 316 Stainless plate

Recommended Posts

This stuff is killing me. I'm trying to drill a .261 hole thru .375 thk 316 Stainless. I'm currently using cobalt stub drills 135deg. The best result I had was 55 sfm .002ipt. It didn't last long, but it was the best one. I ended up helical boring them, but it was taking way long. Any parameter help would be much appreciated.

When you see this stuff come up, look at the Accupro Carbide drills. Inexpensive compared to the productivity and I can tell you who makes them if you really need to know. I push these in a spring guide made of 304 Cond B and it's the only thing that made the job productive/cost effective.

OSG makes some awesome HSS drills for Stainless steel plates

we can drill over 1000 holes with a single drill in SS316L plates (heat exchangers)

in 316 it's mandatory to drill to full depth without any peck, and use as much coolant as you can

if you use pecks , the surface of the plate get harder, so the drill wear really fast, not just on the cutting edges , but also on the diameter ...
