Haas dynamic fixture offset

Anyone know if it is possible/feasible to retrofit a Haas 5 axis with a controller that will use dynamic offsets?

 

According to Haas; they don't have any way to upgrade a VF6TR.

 

I'm hoping for something that does not involve jacking up the radiator cap and driving a new machine under it;)

Yes.

 

Question is in the long run what is going to be cheaper?

 

IMHO jacking it up shipping it out the door and getting a machine that will do everything you need.

I would just write a dynamic workoffset macro. That's what we have on our mills w/o DFO. A couple of people here have done it for 5 axis Haas' as well. Maybe they are willing to share....

Would a macro have the same end result, and will it function with a probe?

Yes and yes. However, would not be quite as elegant as say Fanuc's G54.4 WSEC Work Setting Error Compensation. You would prove a position and than run the macro which would "Translate the work offset about your rotary axis'. The plus side to this is you can build in some safety features with the macro. We don't use it for 5x but do it all the time in 4x HMC's.
