Laser tool touch off

Recommended Posts

I am trying to get my my laser tool setter dialed in. Right now I can't get it to measure the tool length accurately, tools can be off up to .0008. I measure tools ranging from .005 to .5". The machine is a Makino E33 and the laser is a Renishaw NC4. Any help would be appreciated.

All of our Makino's have Blum lasers and we run a calibration cycle with a stylus a couple of times a year. We never see more than a tenth or two deviation on tools. I've never used Renishaw, however, I suspect their process would be the same. Check with your Renishaw dealer for help.

I do have the master. I honestly don't know the last time it was done. All I can say for sure is I have been running it for a year and I haven't done it myself. I will have to pull out the book to see how to do it. Its always good to learn something new.

On the Blum I get issues if I don't have the tool data described properly in the tool table. Bad data = tool not at focal point of laser. We use .02" off the edge as our standard. For instance a .500 flat end mill would be .02" in z and .230 in radial positioning values, for a .500 ball it would be .270 in z and 0 for the radial. If these settings are off we can get weird numbers.
