Help Me Surfacing

Part in question:

Material-D2

One Piece!

Needs to done ASAP

Will be turned before milling.

We don't have the material yet so I have some time to play around with the toolpaths

Mastercam says 30hr + cycle time

I want some tips on my approach and feeds/speeds

I normally don't do surfacing (mill-turn mainly) but I switched jobs recently. Any surfacing I did was on small parts so cycle was never any issue even if I didn't use the most efficient tool path.

Mastercam is fairly new to me

Notes- R 3/16 in the bottom that why I choose a 3/8 ball

Part is attached (Mastercam X8)

Seriously, a job that big, you need the proper tooling or it's going to take what it takes

I don't mean that in a hard way it's just the reality, I could rough that in under and hour with a feedmill

I may have a redundant tool path here, but you'll get the idea

A little over 2 hours

The feedmiill will pay for itself in time savings, most places stock them and can ship Next Day

I recommend

Do you think a 2inch high feed would be to big?

It'll work but with the larger size you'll have more materiel on the bottom that it can't reach, you may have to add an additional tool to smooth thing s bit more before going for finish

I Just laid it out, you'd have an extra .03" in the bottom of the basin to deal with

Here is my take on it.

Looks like about 2.5 hours. 1 hour to rough, 1.5 hours to finish.

I roughed it with the .500 endmill with the .03 CR. Then finished with the .375 ball. I used the HST Project to semi-finish and finish the walls, before finishing the top radii and the floor. That should help give you a nice finish on the walls, and prevent the Raster finish path from gouging on the walls.

Hope that helps,

Colin
