CPU / RAM / VIDEO

I'm using a AMD 2600+ Athalon, 512 MB RAM, and a 32MB NVIDIA VIDEO CARD. When Mastercam is crunching the toolpath it is virtually impossible to do anything else with the machine. Is there anything I should do? Is part of my system weak?

Thanks in advance, You guys are a huge help.

I'd say that your video card was weak, but that shouldn't effect toolpath crunching time that much and if it works ok for you then thats fine.

check out this thread for some recommendations on speeding up MC toolpaths crunching, these might help you.

Also...what are memory allocations set to in Screen/Config.... You might need to bump your settings down a little to free up ram for your other applications. I think the general rule around here is to set your ram allocations for MC to about half of your available ram

Depending on the file size you may have to go into the configuration of mastercam and give it more toolpath buffers to work with.

If your system is set to the default amount this may no be enough.

Also if the file is extremely large or complex, you may need anoth 512MB of ram.

A newer video card would be nice but won't help you calculate toolpaths any faster.

Lee - do you know what kind of motherboard you have and/or the chipset that is used. I had and AMD system with a sis chipset - it uses an integrated north and south bridge for all i/o routines. And when I ran large toolpaths or tried to burn a CD - my machine was locked up until it was done - sound like the same problem you are having. I got a new motherboard -- nforce2 chipset and no longer have that problem. Its worth a look.

I recently updated that machine with the sis board to with a different board - and it seems a lot better.
