countersink

I have numerous oportunities to use countersinking in my programs. I have never done this on the NC. What strategy should be used (Drill, Mill etc.) and what type of countersink should I use. I only have entry level mastecam where I work (soon to be upgraded!).

Welcome to the forum, Chad.

 

Level 1 will do it just fine. Use a drilling cycle, with either a chamfer tool or a countersink tool. Set the top of stock to the Z level where the top of the hole is, set the Z depth to the same. Just to the right of the Z depth is a green calculator looking button, press it and it'll take you to the c'sink dia calculator dialog. There's help there for it.

Have a quick question what is the deal with the 2 dialog boxs

1) add to depth

and

2) overwrrite depth

when would you really use those 2 options

If you hole is below Z0, set top of stock & depth to use incremental values.

I like to add a touch of dwell (.1) to the countersink cycle, just to make sure a single lip tool will cut all the way around...Maybe not needed (esp. in smaller holes), but just a habit of mine.

Add to Depth will 'quietly' add the value to your posted program. Overwrite Depth will change the value you see in Z Depth. I always use Overwrite so I can see the actual depth it will be going.

I always tell Mastercam that the drill has an .040 flat on the tip when spotting or c'sinking. Nothing sucks worse than ruining a $300 part with a giant countersink on the first hole; except maybe ruining a $3000 part...

It also sucks scrapping the part running the chamfer tool. It's usually the last tool I program. For me there is nothing worse than having a just about completed part, than the chamfer tool kills it all for me... Can't blame the tool though, gotta blame the programmer.

Thats why I use the intersection of the OD and the angle as zero on my angled tools. That way it doesn't matter if the tip has a .04 flat or a .4 flat it comes out perfect every time.

LoL.

 

There's certain things you just gotta register high and away, then dial it in. Lies are not acceptable when creating/programming tool shapes, IMNSHO.

 

It's up to the setup guy and the programmer. The programmer has to make accurate, dependable, repeatable and followable programs. The setup guy has to have the foresite to see potential problems and adjust for it. It's a team effort.

 

Besides, the thing about lies is that you always forget about a lie you made last week/month/year and get bit.
