Lathe tool radial clearance

Recommended Posts

I have done this in a work around way.

Once you have your toolpath programmes, backplot it step by step. Right down the coordinates where the tool does the initial plunge. On a new level create a couple of circles where the tool will plunge, these will be the minimum and maximum diameters specified by the manufacturer for the initial plunge. Import a 3D model of your tool and place it the position as if it were cutting. Move it exactly to the x coordinate and change your view to left so you can see your tool and the circles you created. You can visually see if the holder will clear.

Hopefully I explained it clearly enough.

Not really in 2018. In 2019 you will have the ability to add 3D tool holders and that should give you the ability to do what you are after.

Cool, cuz custom tooling in lathe is a PITA to work with, especially the square boring bars....
