Tools for fixing old corrupted MCX files?

Recommended Posts

We have lost NC code file for an old job and the MCX file (from 2011) which I try to open gives

image.png.568a5043762cb58d690066928c95bae2.png

and the file fails to open, only machine group and toolspath groups are there, nothing else. Google says this is a rare error and a bug in some ancient Mcam version and the dude who programmed it obviously didnt try to recover it.

It would seem it's time to reprogram. Is there by any chance recovery tools available I should try first? I have tried opening it in X5, X6, X7, X8, X9, 2017, 2018 and 2019 with no luck, HOWEVER, I am able to import ops.

I'm thinking this was an old V8 or V9 file that was opened the saved in X (??)

Any chance you have a copy of the original V8 or 9 file

Try opening a blank file, loading the proper machine def, then importing the operations with geometry  from the dead file

I was able to reconstruct the file using import operations. It didn't even take too long. Lost all the solids and some geometry were messed up, but it is postable.

Thanks.

I used to work with a guy who keep his chaining tolerance at .004" by default

I normally run that setting at .0001.

Frequently, when I opened his files, solids would fail to load because the chains failed at my .0001 setting

Once open, toolpaths would often fail to regen for the same reason.

If I set my default chain tolerance to .004, his files would open properly.

Something like this may be going on with this problem file.

Good call on this, G.   I forget what version (x7?) that every chain selection started remembering your chaining settings.   That was a nice improvement.
