planar Chain

  • I'm trying to extrude the J-Slot thru the solid but keep getting a planar chain error. This is not for machining, just a visual reference. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong?  Running X7. I did a flat layout to drive the tool and that works fine but I would sure like to have a solid model of it to show the operators what is  going on. Visual aides seem to help a lot around here and I can add it to their setup sheet.
  • Thanks

I see two issues with what you're trying to do.  First, extrude needs its geometry to be on a flat plane; it can't handle geometry wrapped on a cylinder.  Second, it needs a closed chain with an inside and an outside, defining the area to extrude.  If I were you I might model 1/6 (one J-hook) of the part, then copy it around.

I don't know of a way to wrap a solid in Mastercam, only in Solidworks.  That said, the best way to proceed depends on exactly what result you're trying to get.  I assume you're trying to model a part as it would be cut on a rotary axis?  If so there's still some variability, as you could cut it rolldie style or with the cutter on the center axis, and the result will change depending on the size of the cutter.

Ok, that looks perfect but how did you do it or was that from Solidworks?

100% Mastercam 2019.

Created a surface on your solid on a new level. Then I trimmed the surface to your spline. Then I converted the surface to a solid. Then I used the thicken solid command.
